The Popes herd was founded in 1988 with the purchase of two females from local breeders. These were quickly followed by purchases from some of the top herds in the Country at that time, namely, Cloford, Sterling, Tintoside, Revlex and Misarden to name a few.
Emphasis has always been placed on cow families and we still have descendants from the original cows in the herd.
Our most prolific families have been the Nellies, Trixie Belles and the Cadettes. The Trixie Belle family has produced two Perth Champions one being the famous Popes Laird which has been an outstanding sire at Corskie after being purchased for 12,000gns at Perth, when he was Supreme Champion.
The herd totals 20 breeding females, which have been selected for femininity, length, growth, locomotion, docility and easy fleshing. Leading brood females are part of a flushing programme and we now have some exciting youngstock on the ground as a result of this work.
We have recently added Clonguish Diamond, which was Junior Champion when purchased at Roscommon for 10000 Euros and Clonguish Empress the Weanling Champion purchased for 10600 Euros.
The herd is performance recorded through ABRI Breedplan and has had tremendous success in showing over the years, winning at most of the major shows across the country. We believe that showing is an important shop window for our breed.
Stock Bulls are carefully selected and we have had much success with the progeny from our Perth Senior Champion Banwy Wonderboy, who has left us some fantastic females, easy fleshed, well grown feminine and full of breed character.
Our latest stock bull is from the renowned Kilbride Farm herd in Northern Ireland. Kilbride Farm Comber was purchased for £20,000gns in Stirling in October 2012.
Semen is available from Cogent for both bulls.
The Herd is a member pf the CHeCS Health Scheme and the farm is in a four year testing parish for TB the herd is also accredited for Johnes disease since Jan 2011.
