Popes Barclay 10 has joined the Cogent stud in Cheshire and is being marketed as "the complete package "
PRESS RELEASE FROM COGENT
Cogent acquires ‘complete-package’ Simmental bull
An exceptional young Simmental bull that will transmit breed-leading maternal traits alongside excellent growth rates and carcase conformation has been added to the Cogent Signature Beef portfolio.
The bull, Popes Barclay 10, is a son of the 2010 Perth senior champion, Banwy Wonderboy and descends from the successful Nelly line in the Lancashire-based Popes herd.
The combination of high EBVs (Estimated Breeding Values) for growth and carcase traits combined with exceptional maternal qualities earn him one of the highest Self Replacing Indexes* of the breed at +84.
Combining an outstanding maternal calving ease score with high milk production (top 10%), Barclay daughters will go on to make exceptional suckler cows with all of the traits required in a maternal line.
A top 10% direct calving ease figure is a further important feature of the bull’s index, while breed-average birth weights do not stop his progeny going on to achieve high 400 days weights.
“We’re delighted to have acquired such a ‘complete package’ sire, with both the looks and the figures,” says Boomer Birch, Cogent’s beef specialist. “The moment I saw him I knew he was right for the Cogent stud. His stunning breed characteristics are complemented by exceptional conformation and strength to his loin.
“His breeding and back pedigree also attracted us to this bull, as his mother is an exceptional cow, while his father is breeding super consistency in the Popes herd.”
Barclay’s breeders, Jimmy and Vikki Wood added: “Barclay is the first son of the exceptional bull, Wonderboy, to enter AI, while his dam is a direct descendant of the original, foundation Nelly to enter our herd. The Nellys are the most prolific family at Popes, breeding consistently and producing show winners across the country. Barclay’s dam is now 10 years old and continues to produce top quality calves year after year.”
